Natural hair can be overwhelming and frustrating when you are beginning to learn how to properly care for your hair. If you’re not sure where to start – what products to use, which tools you need, or even which styles to try, then this list is for you!
This checklist will hopefully get you started on your journey and provide you with the basic natural hair care essentials.
MUST HAVE PRODUCTS
Sulfate Free Shampoo – A moisturizing sulfate free shampoo will cleanse your hair without the harsh, drying effects of sulfates.Moisturizing Conditioner – Conditioning your hair after you shampoo helps to replenish moisture. Choose a conditioner with lots of slip so you can detangle while conditioning.
Deep Conditioner – I love a reparative deep conditioning mask, which can not only moisturize your hair but strengthen it as well.
Leave-In Conditioner – A moisturizer is one of the most important parts of your regimen! Water is the only substance that can moisturize your hair, so it is important to use a water based leave in conditioner to moisturize your natural hair.
Oil or Butter Sealant – Sealing in the moisture from your leave-in conditioner can be done with an oil (like coconut or olive oil) or a shea butter product. It prevents the moisture in your hair from drying out and evaporating.
Styling Product – Styling products such as curl creams and gels help to hold your curls in place and prevent frizz.
MUST HAVE TOOLS
Wide Tooth Comb – Wide tooth combs are great for detangling and parting natural hair.Satin Bonnet or Pillowcase – Cotton absorbs the moisture out of your hair and can snag/pull out your strands while you sleep. Satin protects your hair while keeping it moisturized, can prevent tangles, and also keeps your curls in place.
Elastic Headbands – Hair elastics are great for sectioning hair while styling, buns, ponytails, or puffs. Look for the ones without metal to prevent snagging and breakage.
Detangling Brush – Detangling brushes help detangle hair and clump curls while styling.
Afro Pick – Afro picks add volume to natural hair.
Spray Bottle – DIY your own conditioner or simply add water to remoisturize your hair. Spray bottles can be used to refresh styles as well.
