Spring has finally sprung, and summer is almost upon us. Can you believe Memorial Day is right around the corner? Here in New York City, we had a pretty rough winter this year, so warmer temps couldn't come fast enough.
The change in seasons can be rough on both our skin and our hair, so it's time to whip our afros back into shape! Here are my tips on how to achieve summer ready natural hair:
Get a Trim
The winter months are extra harsh on our strands, especially our ends which usually end up rubbing against scarves, jackets, and bearing the brunt of the cold. If it's been a while since your last trim, trim off those raggedy ends and start fresh for the new season.
Limit Direct Heat
Since the weather is a lot warmer outside in the spring and summer, now is a perfect time to air dry. Limiting the use of heat can reduce dryness, split ends, and damage so get rid of those blow dryers and flat irons!
Do a Protein Treatment
When was your last protein treatment? A protein treatment can help temporarily mend and protect the damaged cuticle layer, which may be caused by manipulation, heat, or damage. Some people choose to use a light protein treatment regularly to prevent damage, and some choose to choose a hair deep treatment or reconstructor (for highly damaged hair) weekly.
BONUS: Clean Out Your Product Stash!!!
Check the expiration dates on your hair products. Most all natural hair products expire within 6 months to a year, so toss out any products that you haven't used in the past 6 months or so. Expired products are a breeding ground for bacteria and mold, which will both do more harm than good.
Is your natural hair ready for summer? How do you prepare it for the warmer months?
